Stake Day
The Sigma Nu Chapter at Delaware Valley College assisted with a local Boy Scout troop on "stake day". They helped set up camp sites for 1500 incoming boy scouts for next weekend's camping. This was the 100th annual pilgrimage to Valley Forge National Park for camping. Project Location:Valley Forge National Historical Park
Project Description:Assist the Cradle of Liberty Council of the Boy Scouts of America with preparing for their 100th annual pilgrimage and encampment at Valley Forge National Park. The service project was to help lay out where camp sites will be, drive stakes in the ground to mark the sites, and help in putting up staff tents. with Sigma Nu's help, the camp layout the prior week was done in about 5 hours. We helped make an all-day project into a little more than half a day, and lightened the load of the other helpers.
Project Results:We recieved compliments and thanks from the Scout people. The sites were laid out in a much shorter amount of time. As a result of APO's help, the campers the following weekend were able to find their camp sites easily and it made the organizer's jobs a little easier, too.

Outline of Planning Steps:Contact Scout coordinator for details. They just needed to know how many people would be helping. Announcements were made at chapter meetings and a sign-up sheet was passed around. Designated drivers were chosen, along with a meeting time.
Other Organizations:BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA The Cradle of Liberty Council of the BSA was laying out camp sites for their annual Pilgrimage and Encampment in the park. They had a plan on how to accomplish things, but with the numbers of camp sites that were needed to set up, the process would take almost a full day. Fortunately, with the help of Sigma Nu chapter, that time was reduced and we were all done in about 5 hours.

Additional information provided regarding this project:

This was a very special event for the Boy Scouts. The Valley Forge Pilgrimage and Encampment is the longest running annual Scouting event in the world. This year was the 100th annual Pilgrimage. The event is held on President’s Day weekend each year. The Pilgrimage is on Saturday of that weekend, where Scouts tour the park and see re-enactors and historians bring history to life. This gives a glimpse into how things were during that winter during the Revolutionary War. This year, 4,000 people attended. Many Scouts camp out for the weekend as well, from Friday through Sunday. This is what Sigma Nu chapter helped in setting up for. This year, 1,900 people camped out for the entire weekend.
